Theseus rescuing Hippodameia

A complex; King Theseus tries to save Hippodameia – wife of the king of the Lapiths Peirithos – from the drunken Centaur Evrytion. The fourth figure of the complex is a follower of Hippodameia who has fallen to the ground, helpless.

A melee combat has been going on for 85 years in Victoria Square

It is located between the historic 3rd Septemvriou Street and Aristotelous, the sky above and the subway lines that connect underground squares, statues, neighborhoods and people. A wonderful moment of battle that, no matter how hard we try to represent today, we will fail miserably; even though such battles take place every day in our cities and often surpass art in dynamics. In a neighborhood whose physiognomy has changed a lot in recent years, such a sculpture forces you to think and make projections. Who is who in the modern big city? And finally who are we with? With the prince who wants to save the beautiful Hippodameia – for reasons of honor and bravery defending his king friend – or with the ambiguous creature who also claims his place in the world? With some violence, yes, but is his fight fair? The most permanent inhabitants of the square, the pigeons, also try to take a position by changing the balance of the sculpture visually and semantically; sometimes they stand by Theseus and sometimes by the Centaur. But we said, in life but also in art everything is a matter of perspective. After all, the creator never looks at his sculpture only from the front.
